Description: This article will explain how to create home poker tournaments that everyone can enjoy. Home poker tournaments are fun for the whole family.
Having some friends or family over to play poker is a great way to spend an evening. It’s inexpensive, interesting, and challenging for everyone. You don’t need to be a poker pro or a great dealer to host a poker evening. All you need is some basic equipment, a mildly competitive spirit, and some fun people to play with.
Before you can host a poker night you need to decide what kind of poker you are going to play.
Most people know how to play texas hold’em poker, so that is probably the best choice.
If your buddies are familiar with the rules of limit games, then you could use a limit betting ruleset. If you’re playing with novices, then no limit is probably easier to grasp – if not easier to master.
Next you’ll need to decide what kind of currency you’re betting with. When you’re playing with friends and family it’s probably best to keep the stakes small, or to play with fake currency. Poker chips are ideal, but if you don’t have any you could play with potato chips or candy.
If you want to play for real money to increase the excitement, then set a buy-in that everyone can afford, and award the top few players a percentage of that money. Doh’t set the buy-in so high that your less well-off friends feel excluded, or have to cut their food budget in order to attend the game.
Ideally, you want a minimum of five other people to play with. Short handed poker games tend to be less fun. If you have more people, the game will take longer to play out.
Agree break times in advance so that there are no arguments about whether play should be paused so that somebody can leave the table for a while. If people do need to stand up for a moment, be consistent about table rules – don’t pause play for some people, and keep playing for others. This will only lead to arguments.
